BRASILIA, July 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at the 17th BRICS Summit’s Outreach Session, called upon BRICS nations to pursue the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), emphasizing the need to balance innovation with ethical governance. Addressing a session on “Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence,” Modi stressed that the BRICS bloc must adopt an inclusive and human-centric AI framework.
Highlighting India’s principle of “AI for All”, the Prime Minister said the country views AI as a powerful tool to enhance human capabilities and ensure equitable benefits. He noted that India is already applying AI across sectors to drive inclusive development and that the global South must be actively involved in shaping AI norms.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, also present at the session, echoed Modi’s sentiments, warning against AI becoming “a club of the few.” Guterres called for global reforms in multilateral institutions like the UN Security Council to ensure that AI governance addresses the structural imbalances in the global system and gives developing nations a real voice.
Modi also proposed the creation of a BRICS science and research repository, aimed at strengthening the resilience of critical mineral supply chains, particularly for Global South countries. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to a multipolar world and said BRICS, with its diversity, can play a pivotal role in shaping it.
India is set to chair BRICS in 2026 and host the ‘AI Impact Summit’. Modi invited all BRICS nations to participate, underscoring India’s readiness to lead in global AI collaboration.
