IMPHAL, April 15: The People’s Progressive Alliance Manipur (PPAM) has issued a firm ultimatum to the 59 elected MLAs of the state, demanding the immediate formation of a government within a week.
Speaking at a press conference, PPAM member Th. Sujata warned that if no substantial progress is made, the alliance will initiate a signature campaign to determine which MLAs are willing to take responsibility for forming the government and which are not.
“The BJP, having the majority, cannot shirk its responsibility. They cannot wait indefinitely for directions from the Centre,” Sujata declared, criticizing the delay in the government formation process.
This strong statement follows Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent remarks in the Rajya Sabha, where he stated that the imposition of President’s Rule (PR) in Manipur was not solely a decision of the Centre, but the result of the failure of the state’s elected MLAs to stake claim and form a government.
Reacting to this, the PPAM expressed strong disapproval, accusing the Centre of shifting blame and engaging in political manipulation. “The people have given their mandate. The elected representatives should act without waiting for the Centre’s approval. The Centre has already failed Manipur in many ways,” Sujata emphasized.
The alliance also lashed out at the Centre’s handling of law and order, particularly criticizing the ongoing disturbances along National Highway 2 between Sekmai and Kangpokpi. “If the Centre cannot even ensure peace in such a short stretch, why should we depend on it to guide state-level governance?” Sujata questioned.
In addition to these concerns, Sujata called for urgent accountability in the ongoing violence and instability across the state. She particularly highlighted the failure to track down individuals like Mukesh, alleging that authorities are indulging in “political drama” instead of ensuring public safety.
“We are tired of the show. Our representatives must protect us at any cost,” Sujata concluded, underscoring PPAM’s readiness to escalate its efforts if the government formation process does not move forward.
