IMPHAL, Dec 12: President Droupadi Murmu on Friday paid floral tributes at Nupi Lal memorial complex and offered prayers at a temple in Imphal.
“On the ocassion of 86th Nupi Lal Day, President Murmu offered floral tributes at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex in Imphal, paying heartfelt homage to the brave mothers of Manipur whose courage continues to inspire generations” an official said.
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla who accompanied Murmu during the visit at the memorial complex also paid floral tributes to the mothers of the state.
Nupi Lal Day refers to two women led movements in Manipur against British colonial policies in 1904 and 1939.
Murmu also offered prayers at the more than 2 centuries old Radha Govinda idols at the Shree Shree Govindaji temple at Palace Compound, some 2 km from Nupi Lal memorial complex. The temple is the citadel of Manipur vaishanavism.
Murmu is also scheduled to visit the Naga dominated district of Senapati and interact with members of Maram Naga tribes. She is also set to inaugurate several projects.
Former chief minister N Biren Singh who also paid floral tributes at the memorial complex told reporters “what can be bigger than the president Murmuji paying homage to the brave mothers who fought against the colonial British. From all Manipuris, I welcome the president.”
