NEW DELHI, Nov 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to receive Nigeria’s prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), one of the country’s second highest civilian honors, during his ongoing visit to Nigeria. This recognition makes PM Modi the second foreign dignitary to be conferred with the honor, following Queen Elizabeth II, who received it in 1969. This marks the 17th international award presented to Prime Minister Modi by a foreign nation.
PM Modi arrived in Abuja, Nigeria, on Sunday, beginning a three-nation tour that will also take him to Brazil and Guyana from November 17 to November 21. Upon his arrival, he was welcomed by Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, Nigeria’s Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, who presented the Prime Minister with the ‘Key to the City’ of Abuja. The gesture was a symbolic sign of the Nigerian people’s trust and respect for the Indian leader.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with Nigerian officials to further strengthen the ties between the two nations. PM Modi, in a statement issued upon his arrival, emphasized the importance of the visit, which is the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria in 17 years. The visit comes at the invitation of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and PM Modi expressed his eagerness to build upon the longstanding strategic partnership between India and Nigeria.
India and Nigeria have been strategic partners since 2007, with growing collaborations in the areas of economic, energy, and defense sectors. Over 200 Indian companies have invested more than USD 27 billion in key sectors within Nigeria. Additionally, both countries share a strong development cooperation partnership, which is expected to be further discussed during the visit.
During his time in Nigeria, Prime Minister Modi will engage in talks aimed at reviewing the strategic partnership and exploring new avenues to enhance bilateral cooperation between India and Nigeria. The visit underscores the significance of the two countries’ relationship, especially in light of their shared values and mutual interests in strengthening democracy and pluralism.
Recently, Dominica announced it will confer its highest national honour on PM Modi in recognition of his contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic and his efforts to strengthen ties between the two nations.
