NEW DELHI, Nov 28: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took oath as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. Holding a copy of the Constitution, Priyanka pledged her duties as an MP in the presence of her family, including her mother Sonia Gandhi, brother Rahul Gandhi, and her children Raihan and Miraya Vadra.
Priyanka Gandhi secured the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 general elections with an impressive margin of 4,10,931 votes, defeating Sathyan Mokeri of the Communist Party of India (CPI). The contest in Wayanad, a Congress stronghold, was a triangular battle between Priyanka, BJP’s Navya Haridas, and CPI’s Sathyan Mokeri.
On Wednesday, Priyanka Gandhi expressed her joy after receiving her certificate of election, calling it a “symbol of love, trust, and commitment to shared values.” She thanked the people of Wayanad for their trust and pledged to work towards building a better future for the constituency. “For me, it is not just a document; it is a symbol of your love, trust, and the values we are committed to. Thank you, Wayanad, for choosing me to take forward this journey,” she said on X (formerly Twitter).
The Wayanad seat had previously been held by her brother Rahul Gandhi, who vacated it after being elected to the Lok Sabha from Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh this year.
In addition to Priyanka Gandhi, Congress leader Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan also took the oath as a Member of Parliament. Chavan won the Nanded Lok Sabha seat in a by-election with 5,86,788 votes after the seat fell vacant following the death of the sitting Congress MP, Vasantrao Balwantrao Chavan.
The by-elections were held in 48 assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats across 15 states, with significant contests in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad, Kerala, where Priyanka Gandhi made her electoral debut.
