SENAPATI, May 29: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Senapati and Tamenglong districts in Manipur, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds from 8:30 AM on May 30 to 8:30 AM on May 31, 2025. The forecast is part of a special bulletin released by the IMD’s National Weather Forecasting Centre on May 29.
The alert, categorized under “Red Warning (Take Action),” also includes Orange and Yellow warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall expected to continue in Senapati district until 8:30 AM on June 3.
In response, the Deputy Commissioner of Senapati, has issued a public advisory urging residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
The advisory lists several safety measures, including:
• Staying updated through official weather alerts.
• Avoiding travel during heavy rain or strong winds.
• Refraining from taking shelter under trees or near metal during lightning.
• Securing loose objects in and around homes.
• Postponing outdoor activities like farming and fishing.
• Staying away from flood-prone zones, rivers, steep slopes, and vulnerable structures.
• Unplugging electrical devices during lightning storms.
• Keeping emergency contacts ready, with the District Helpline Number: +91 76289 92200.
This local warning aligns with the broader IMD forecast, which has alerted several districts in the Northeast, including Imphal East and West, about the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rain till June 1. These areas may experience rainfall between 7 to 11 cm and wind speeds of 30–40 km/h. Senapati and Tamenglong, in particular, may face gusting winds up to 50 km/h, increasing the risk of flash floods and damage to infrastructure.
