NEW DELHI, Dec 19: Proceedings in both Houses of Parliament were marred for the second consecutive day due to protests and repeated adjournments over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Opposition MPs, including Congress, DMK, Samajwadi Party, and others, raised slogans and staged protests, causing disruptions and preventing any substantive business from being transacted.

In the Lok Sabha, when the session resumed after the first adjournment at 2 PM, Opposition members trooped into the well of the House, with some reaching near the Speaker’s chair. Amid the uproar, Speaker Om Birla adjourned the session for the day. Earlier, during the morning session, similar protests were seen as opposition parties condemned Shah’s comments, leading to a second adjournment until 2 PM.

A parallel scene unfolded in the Rajya Sabha, where the session, which reconvened at 2 PM, was disrupted by a debate over an alleged altercation between BJP MP Phangnon Konyak and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during a protest in the Parliament House complex. Konyak alleged that she was misbehaved with by Gandhi, which was met with calls for an apology from the BJP. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju demanded an apology from Gandhi and Congress, accusing them of lowering the dignity of Parliament. BJP leader JP Nadda also condemned the incident, while Congress MP Tiruchi Siva countered the allegations, stating that it was Gandhi who had been pushed.

In the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar disallowed adjournment notices moved by opposition MPs over Shah’s remarks and other issues, urging order in the House. Despite this, protests continued, leading to another adjournment until 2 PM.
