SHILLONG, Nov 30: The Ministry of Education has granted a 15-day extension to the two-member inquiry committee investigating alleged administrative failures at Meghalaya’s North Eastern Hill University (NEHU). This extension, announced in a letter from DK Himanshu, Under Secretary to the Government of India, comes after the committee requested additional time to complete its investigation. Initially, the panel was set to submit its report by November 29, but it will now present its findings by mid-December.
The inquiry committee, composed of former University Grants Commission Chairman Professor D P Singh and former Assam University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dilip Chandra Nath, visited the university earlier this month to hear grievances from students, faculty, and staff. The ongoing issues at NEHU, which have involved disputes over administrative practices, have created significant unrest on campus, with classes and operations being disrupted.
The committee’s report is seen as a critical step toward resolving the turmoil at the university. It will determine the future course of action, including the fate of Vice-Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla’s tenure. Both students and staff are awaiting the outcome, which is expected to play a pivotal role in restoring normalcy and the smooth functioning of the university.
