IMPHAL, May 10: In the wake of an escalating protest by students at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla met with a delegation of students on Saturday and assured a thorough review of their grievances in consultation with relevant authorities.
The students submitted a memorandum to the Governor at Raj Bhavan, outlining serious allegations against the institute’s Director, including the use of abusive and threatening language. The Governor emphasised that the safety, academic interests, and welfare of the students remain a top priority and appealed to them to maintain peace on campus and remain focused on their studies.
The student protest, which began on May 7, has since led to the resignation of Dr. Th Meera Devi, Dean (Academics), and Dr. Laishram Trinity Meetei, Sub-Dean (Student Affairs), on May 8. The RIMS Deputy Director (Administration) confirmed that the resignations had been accepted by the institute’s authority.
The agitation erupted following students’ claims that the Director made highly inappropriate and damaging remarks. Protesters allege he told students to “dance naked,” “commit suicide,” or that he would “hang them.” These statements, students say, have caused psychological distress and created an atmosphere of fear and hostility on campus.
Participants in the protest included students from various departments such as MBBS, BDS, MRI, MLT, BASLP, and BSc Nursing, who united to demand the immediate removal of the Director and accountability from the administration.
