IMPHAL, Feb 26: Fashion designer and handloom entrepreneur Robert Naorem has successfully brought the state’s rich textile heritage to the global stage. Representing India, Naorem participated in an exclusive international fashion show held in Milan, Italy, where he joined ten designers from around the world at the prestigious event organized by ETv Italy at the Melia Hotel.
Naorem’s collection, titled “Manipur,” paid a heartfelt tribute to the cultural and artistic identity of his home state. The designs featured the state emblem, indigenous animals, flowers, birds, and traditional Meitei scripts, all signature elements of his label, RN Designs. His collection focuses on reviving handloom traditions and promoting sustainable fashion, highlighting Manipur’s exquisite woven silks paired with intricate hand embroidery, tailored for the global market.
Blending traditional aesthetics with modern sensibilities, the collection included original traditional attire, Indian sarees, and Western silhouettes, crafted from Manipur’s signature fabrics. The garments were presented in a refined palette of black, cream, and ivory, appealing to both heritage enthusiasts and contemporary fashion connoisseurs.
Adding to the cultural significance of the event, Manipur artist Suchitra Wangkhem graced the runway alongside 15 models, while the soulful music of Mangka further enhanced the experience. This showcase not only celebrated the artistry of Manipur but also reinforced the state’s craftsmanship on an international platform.
Naorem’s participation in the Milan fashion show shines a much-needed spotlight on Manipur’s textile industry at a time of difficulty. His efforts bring international recognition to the region’s weavers and artisans, emphasizing the resilience and enduring artistry of Manipur’s cultural heritage.
