Imphal, September 8: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Manipur, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has expressed optimism over the gradually improving situation in the Northeast, stating that incidents of violence and secessionist movements are “slowly calming down.”
Speaking at the conclusion of a three-day coordination meeting of the RSS and its affiliated organizations in Jodhpur, RSS national publicity in-charge Sunil Ambekar said a positive atmosphere is emerging across the Northeastern states.
“It is good that the secessionist movements and the regular violence are all slowly calming down and there is an environment of progress,” Ambekar remarked.
He noted that RSS-inspired groups are now actively working in the Northeast in various capacities, helping promote social harmony and national integration. Ambekar highlighted that years-long efforts by these groups to foster communal peace are now beginning to show “tangible results.”
Citing recent developments in Manipur, Ambekar pointed to the easing tensions between Meitei and Kuki communities following a special agreement signed between the Union Home Ministry and the Kuki community. He also welcomed the decision by the Churachandpur-based Kuki-Zo Council to reopen National Highway-02, restoring the free movement of people and essential goods.
“The reopening of NH-02 is very good and shows a willingness from all sides to move forward,” he added.
While Ambekar acknowledged that restoring full harmony will take time, he said the current trends are encouraging. He emphasized that community-led initiatives by RSS-affiliated organizations are helping to bridge ethnic and social divides, allowing for a more stable and development-focused environment to take shape.
The RSS statement comes just days before PM Modi’s scheduled September 13 visit to Manipur—his first trip to the state since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023, which has claimed over 260 lives and displaced thousands.
