SHILLONG, June 10: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, fiercely responded to Congress party’s recent criticisms of the Modi government’s performance over the past 11 years, asserting that the opposition has “forfeited the right to criticize” in the court of the people.

Addressing a press conference in Shillong on Tuesday, he emphasized the transformative progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, particularly in the Northeast, which he said was once neglected and plagued by violence but is now emerging as a vital growth hub.

Sonowal highlighted key achievements, including significant infrastructure development, health initiatives, and social welfare schemes. He pointed out that over 81 crore people now receive free rations under the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, and more than 15 crore rural households have access to tap water through ‘Har Ghar Jal’. The government has disbursed ₹3.7 lakh crore to farmers via PM-KISAN and empowered women through increased reservations and direct benefit transfers.

Focusing on the Northeast, Sonowal underscored the region’s remarkable transformation, noting a 64% decline in insurgency since 2014 and withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act from 75% of the region. Over 3,600 projects worth ₹44,859 crore have been approved, including new airports, improved connectivity, and organic farming initiatives. He emphasized that the region is now seen as India’s gateway to the East, with peace and prosperity at the forefront.

The Minister also highlighted Meghalaya’s tourism potential, citing sanctioned funds of ₹244 crore for sustainable tourism projects at sites like Umium Lake and Nokrek Reserve, which have revitalized local economies. He praised Meghalaya’s scenic beauty and cultural heritage, advocating for its promotion as a vibrant tourism destination.

Additionally, Sonowal pointed out landmark initiatives such as the establishment of South Asia’s largest cancer care network in Assam and the Rising North East Investors Summit 2025, which secured ₹4.3 lakh crore in investment commitments. He stressed that these developments reflect the government’s deep commitment to regional growth, connectivity, and economic empowerment.

Concluding, Sonowal reaffirmed the Modi government’s focus on inclusive development, citing increased infrastructure, social welfare, and regional integration efforts as evidence of its commitment to building a “Viksit Bharat” during the Amrit Kala period. He also criticized the Congress for neglecting the Northeast for decades, asserting that the region’s current trajectory of growth and opportunity is a testament to the transformative leadership of Narendra Modi.
