IMPHAL, April 21: Security Forces in Manipur have arrested eight members of the Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) and seized a large cache of weapons and tactical equipment during a series of operations conducted on April 20.
The crackdown began with the arrest of 37-year-old Umananda Sharungbam in the Wangoi area of Imphal West. Following this, security forces launched a cordon and search operation at the YBC Club near the SDC office in Heirok Part-III, Thoubal District, resulting in the arrest of seven more KCP (PWG) operatives, including a juvenile.
The arrested adult militants were identified as Waikhom Dinku, Mayangmayum Ribaz Khan (also known as Pat), Angom Bobi (alias Wataba), Ningthoujam Choaba Singh (alias Hingchaba), Leishangthem Tomba (alias Thabal Meitei), and Md. Sirajuddin (alias Kham).
The operation led to the recovery of a significant arsenal, including one INSAS light machine gun, two INSAS rifles, a carbine with three magazines, and an MA3 MK-11 rifle. Authorities also seized 76 rounds of INSAS rifle ammunition, 69 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and various other live rounds.
In addition to the firearms, the security personnel recovered 13 mobile phones, radio communication equipment, multiple vehicles, KCP badges, and a range of military-style clothing and gear. Documents described as “literature” were also confiscated during the operation.
The arrests and seizures mark a major success in ongoing efforts to curb militant activity in the region.
