Itanagar, August 9: Security forces have stepped up counterinsurgency operations in eastern Arunachal Pradesh following a pre-dawn gunfight between suspected militants and the Assam Rifles in Tirap district on Saturday.
The encounter broke out around 3 a.m. when suspected cadres of the NSCN and ULFA (Independent) opened fire on the 44 Assam Rifles’ Company Operating Base (COB) at Noglo, under Lazu police station. Troops responded swiftly with heavy firepower, successfully repelling the attack.
The exchange of fire lasted roughly 10 minutes, and no casualties were reported on either side.
Sources said personnel from the CRPF and Arunachal Pradesh Police have joined the Assam Rifles in an intensified search and cordon operation. Intelligence inputs suggest the militants may be plotting strikes on security forces and key installations in the run-up to Independence Day.
