SENAPATI, April 8: The 1st edition of the Late Sepoy K Ashuli Vir Chakra (VrC Posthumously) Memorial Open Volleyball Tournament, 2025, commenced on Monday at Mini Stadium, Senapati, with an enthusiastic turnout of 10 men’s teams and 8 women’s teams from across the state.
Organised by the 16 Assam Rifles in coordination with the Senapati District Olympic Association, Manipur (SDOAM), the tournament is a special initiative aimed at honoring his bravery and sacrifice for the nation.
The event pays tribute to the gallant Sepoy K Ashuli of the 1st Battalion of the Naga Regiment, hailing from Makhan Centre village in Senapati district, who made the supreme sacrifice during Operation Vijay in the Kargil War on July 23, 1999. Sepoy Ashuli was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra for his exceptional courage, devotion to duty, and ultimate sacrifice in the face of enemy fire.
Speaking at the event, Maj. N.M. Singh, Company Commander, Senapati COB, 16 Assam Rifles highlightesd Ashuli’s bravery and dedication, expressing hope that the tournament will become an annual event to continue honouring and remember those who sacrificed selflessly for the nation.
In the women’s category, the participating teams include Maram Sisters, Hoivah Memorial Team (Churachandpur), Senapati Sporting Club, Taphou Phyamai, TRYVC (Kamjong), KKYSO, Teenstars (Kangpokpi), and Senapati Sporting Club (Reserve).
In the men’s division, the title will be contested by TRYVC (Kamjong), Senapati Sporting Club (Reserve), Prime Hostel (Kangpokpi), Mareiri, Youngster VC, BVC (Churachandpur), Senapati Sporting Club, Spartans (Kangpokpi), KKYSO, and DN Brothers (Kangpokpi).
The event will conclude with the finals and closing ceremony on April 11.
