SHILLONG, Nov 27: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday announced that the long-awaited runway expansion of Shillong Airport is expected to be completed by March 2027, paving the way for larger aircraft to operate from the facility.
Speaking to journalists after a Cabinet meeting held at Ward’s Lake, Sangma said the state government has approved the purchase of land from local communities in Umroi. The acquired land will be exchanged with the Defence estate, whose land is required for the runway extension.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who oversees the Transport Department, has been tasked with coordinating the land procurement from local stakeholders.
Sangma said that once the land is handed over, the runway extension work can begin, addressing the long-standing limitation of the airport where only ATR aircraft currently operate. The expansion is expected to significantly boost connectivity and tourism in Meghalaya.
Officials from the Airport Authority of India, the Union Civil Aviation Ministry and the DGCA are scheduled to meet state authorities on Friday to finalise technical aspects. Approval for the tender process is likely after the meeting, the Chief Minister said, adding that contractors may be able to commence work by the end of this year.
