Guwahati, October 6: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said the state government will soon hold a press conference to share critical details from a Special Investigation Team (SIT) report that allegedly links Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife to Pakistan. Describing the contents as “very damaging and damning”, the Chief Minister indicated that the findings could have far-reaching political consequences.

Addressing the media after chairing a Cabinet meeting, Sarma said the report was informally discussed among ministers and described it as “a very, very bad report.” A formal briefing on the report, which has been submitted to the government recently, was expected on Monday but was postponed in light of the ongoing investigation into the sudden demise of popular singer Zubeen Garg.

“Today we have discussed the report informally. It is a very, very damaging and damning report. I can only say it is a very bad report,” said Sarma.

He added that the government will soon hold a detailed press conference, which will include national media representatives from Delhi, given Gogoi’s position as Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha.

“Since Gogoi is a Deputy Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, the national media should also be present at the press conference,” Sarma said, hinting at the national implications of the findings.

The Chief Minister clarified that while the entire SIT report may not be made public, a “gist” of the key findings—along with annexed documents—will be shared to allow the public and media to make their own assessments.

“Not the entire report, but a gist of the report would be made public. The statements of many people are involved,” he added.

Gogoi, the Congress MP from Assam’s Kaliabor constituency, has dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, calling the investigation a “flop show”. Reacting earlier, he accused the ruling BJP of using state machinery for vendetta politics.

The controversy has drawn sharp reactions from across the political spectrum. Union Home Minister Amit Shah previously stated, “Assam cannot be led by Pakistan-linked leaders,” adding fuel to the political fire. Meanwhile, Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi asserted that the outcome of the SIT disclosure could be a political tipping point, saying: “Either Gaurav Gogoi will go to jail or the Chief Minister will have to step down.”
