GUWAHATI, Dec 6: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of Assam’s cultural icon Zubeen Garg is set to submit its chargesheet on December 12, with the investigation now in its final stage, officials said on Saturday.

Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta, who heads the SIT, told reporters that the probe is “almost complete,” and that more than 300 witnesses have been examined so far. “The details will be given in the chargesheet, and it will be submitted to the court on December 12. So far, seven arrests have been made,” he said, adding that for now, only one chargesheet will be filed under case 18/2025.

Gupta declined to reveal further details, stating that clarity on the findings will emerge once the chargesheet is officially filed.

The death of the beloved singer-actor on September 19 in Singapore, initially reported as an accidental drowning, has since been declared a case of murder by the Assam government. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently said the SIT had gathered nearly 3,500 pages of documents and that the government had reached the conclusion of homicide within the first three days of the probe, which began on September 23.

The accused have been booked under BNS Sections 61, 105, and 106, with the government urging the Gauhati High Court to include Section 103 (equivalent to IPC 302) to prevent the possibility of bail. Sarma stressed the importance of filing the chargesheet before December 18, warning that delays could make the accused eligible for bail.
