Phnom Penh, Oct 3: The Indian Embassy in Cambodia has successfully rescued 67 Indian citizens who were victims of fraudulent job scams, thanks to cooperation with Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior. The operation targeted a job racket in Poipet that had misled individuals with false job offers.
Following a tip-off, Cambodian police rescued the victims on September 22. Many had sought better job prospects abroad, only to find themselves caught in cyber crime.
The repatriation is ongoing: 15 Indians returned home on September 30, followed by another 24 on October 1, with 28 more scheduled to return soon.
The Indian Embassy has issued a warning about fraudulent job offers in Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries, urging caution regarding suspicious agents and social media ads. They have also provided an emergency helpline (85592881676) and two official email addresses (cons.phnompenh@mea.gov.in and visa.phnompenh@mea.gov.in) for those needing help.
Since January 2022, the embassy has facilitated the repatriation of over 1,000 Indian nationals, including around 770 in the first nine months of this year. The embassy is committed to monitoring the situation and assisting citizens against such scams.
