NEW DELHI, Feb 25: Rekha Gupta on Wednesday condemned the alleged racial harassment of three women from Arunachal Pradesh in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, asserting that any misconduct against people from the Northeast residing in the national capital will not be tolerated.
The Chief Minister met the victims and assured them of full support, describing Delhi as a city of diversity, respect and mutual dignity. In a social media post after the meeting, Gupta said strict action would be taken against those involved in the incident.
The alleged harassment came to light after videos circulated on social media showing the women being subjected to racial slurs and humiliation during a dispute over repair work at their rented accommodation on February 20. During the altercation, neighbours reportedly used derogatory language against them.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police arrested the accused couple, identified as Harsh Singh and Ruby Jain. An FIR has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including charges related to outraging a woman’s modesty and promoting enmity on grounds of religion and race. Provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have also been invoked.
Police officials said the investigation is being conducted by an ACP-rank officer under the supervision of senior authorities, and further inquiry is underway.
