SENAPATI, June 6: In a remarkable show of environmental stewardship, the Thingba Khullen Youth and Students’ Organisation observed World Environment Day 2025 on June 5 by organising a tree plantation drive to instill awareness and encourage action for the protection of the environment.
In alignment with this year’s global theme — “Beat Plastic Pollution” — the organisation also conducted a plastic cleanliness drive in and around the village. The initiative aimed to create awareness among the local population about the harmful impacts of plastic pollution, and the urgent need to protect the oceans and land from environmental degradation.
The campaign was led by the organisation’s President, Mr. Stephen Soulunii, a well-known and outspoken activist who consistently advocates for the need to protect the environment as a means to combat climate change and promote sustainable living for future generations.
Over 50 youths actively participated in the initiative, showcasing strong community involvement and commitment to ecological preservation. As part of the event, the participants successfully planted more than 100 evergreen trees, contributing to reforestation and long-term environmental sustainability.
Speaking about the initiative, Stephen suggested that everyone needs to do their part to protect the environment, save oceans and land and be the change that the planet needs. He emphasised that together we can end plastic pollution by behaving responsibly.
World Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5 June and encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment.
