IMPHAL, March 11: In a swift police operation, three suspected phishing callers who impersonated Jay Shah, son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, were brought to Imphal this morning, just 23 days after a police complaint was filed. The suspects are alleged to have offered ministerial positions to state legislators for ₹4 crore, attempting to exploit the ongoing political situation in Manipur.
The case emerged following the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur on February 13, when multiple state legislators reported receiving calls from an individual claiming to be Jay Shah. The caller allegedly promised them ministerial positions in exchange for ₹4 crore, leading to concerns about political manipulation through fraudulent means.
On February 15, the Manipur Police confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that they had received complaints regarding fraudulent calls made to MLAs, with the intent to influence and mislead them. The issue quickly drew media attention as it was revealed that one MLA had received multiple WhatsApp calls from an unknown number without a display picture. The caller falsely introduced himself as Jay Shah and demanded ₹4 crore for facilitating government formation.
