Senapati, Sept 21: A thunderstorm on Saturday afternoon provided much-needed relief to the residents of Manipur from the intense heat and humidity. Strong winds and light rain accompanied the storm, offering residents a break from the oppressive heatwave.
However, the storm caused some damages in Imphal East and Thoubal districts, where uprooted tin roofs and fallen tree branches blocked roads, obstructing roads and creating difficulties for commuters. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
In addition, vegetable farms in the area were also severely affected.
A maximum temperature of 33.7°C was recorded in the state capital, Imphal, on September 20, which is 3.7°C above normal. The state has been enduring a heatwave-like conditions for the past few days.
Additionally, the Meteorological Centre Imphal of the India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in 16 districts on September 22. Areas under alert include Tamenglong, Senapati, Kangpokpi, Ukhrul, Kamjong, Jiribam, Noney, Tengnoupal, Chandel, Churachandpur, and Pherzawl, with the warning in place until September 23.
