GUWAHATI, June 24: Train services over the Lumding–Badarpur hill section have been severely affected due to boulders and landmass falling onto the railway track between New Haflong and Jatinga Lampur. The incident occurred due to improper construction activities being carried out by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for road repairs in the area, forcing Northeast Frontier Railway (N.F. Railway) to suspend rail operations from the evening of June 23 to ensure passenger safety.
According to reports, ongoing road repair work destabilized the slope on the downstream side between the road and rail line, causing a structural failure and bulging of the landmass towards the railway track. Water has also been flowing directly onto the railway track from the road side, further compromising its integrity. With conditions at the site being deemed critical and unsafe for train passage, N.F. Railway immediately suspended traffic between Lumding, New Haflong, and Badarpur.
In response to the threat, the N.F. Railway authority of Lumding Division has written to NHAI, urging them to carry out proper protective works using adequate manpower and machinery to prevent further damage. This railway route is vital for connectivity to Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and parts of the Barak Valley.
Railway personnel have already been deployed to remove debris from the affected section. However, the damage has led to multiple train cancellations, short terminations, and a rescheduling of services:
