AGARTALA, Oct 31: In a shocking incident, a 63-year-old tribal woman was allegedly lynched to death on suspicion of practising witchcraft in Abhicharan village under Sidhai Police Station limits, West Tripura district. Police said the victim, identified as Nandarani Debbarma, was accused by locals of performing black magic that they believed had caused illness among two families in the area.
Following her disappearance, a special police team launched an extensive search operation. On October 26, her body was exhumed from a forested area near the village. Based on the recovery, police registered an FIR and arrested three individuals from the locality on Thursday for their alleged involvement in the killing.
According to preliminary investigation, a mob had stormed Nandarani’s residence, assaulted her brutally, and tied her to a window to ensure her death before burying her body in the forest to conceal evidence.
Confirming the arrests, Ajit Kumar Chakma, Officer-in-Charge of Sidhai Police Station, said the accused are being interrogated and that further investigation is underway.
Police have condemned the incident as a heinous act driven by superstition, urging the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to report such suspicions through lawful means.
