AGARTALA, April 2: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has reaffirmed the state’s zero-tolerance policy on drugs, highlighting that 70 people have been convicted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in the past three years.
“Drugs are coming from Myanmar via Assam and Mizoram while ganja is going out of the state…,” Saha said, emphasizing the need for strict law enforcement to tackle the issue.
Replying to a notice by Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy in the Assembly on April 1, the Chief Minister stated that law enforcement agencies have been directed to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking.
He detailed the state’s ongoing crackdown on drug-related crimes, reporting that 19 individuals were convicted in 13 NDPS cases in 2022, 20 individuals were convicted in 16 cases in 2023, and 26 individuals were convicted in 2024. As of February 2025, five people have been convicted under the NDPS Act, bringing the total to 70 convictions across 52 cases from 2022 to February 2025.
Saha also underscored the significant drug seizures made by security agencies in the past two years.
“A total of 1.54 lakh kg of ganja has been seized in 2022-23 and 2023-24, while 5.82 lakh banned cough syrup bottles have been confiscated and 25.62 lakh yaba tablets have been recovered during this period,” he stated.
The Chief Minister reiterated his government’s commitment to eradicating the drug menace and ensuring a safer Tripura through stringent enforcement measures and inter-state coordination.
