Agartala, Oct 7: One person was killed and several others injured after security forces opened fire to control an escalating law and order situation in North Tripura’s Kadamtala area on Sunday evening. The deceased have been identified as Sultan Ahmed.
The tensions escalated when a Muslim family, en route to Silchar for medical treatment, was stopped by a Durga Puja organiser who demanded a substantial sum of money. This confrontation led to a heated argument and physical altercation between the two parties.
To prevent further escalation of the situation, the Tripura Government has imposed prohibitory orders under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in Kadamtala following communal clashes between two communities over the collection of Durga Puja donations. The Dharmanagar Sub-division of North Tripura enacted these restrictions after receiving reports from the North Tripura Superintendent of Police (SP) regarding the potential for unrest.
In response to the incident, members of the Muslim community staged a protest outside the local police station, calling for severe action against the organiser involved. A police officer confirmed that one individual was arrested following the complaints.
The situation deteriorated further when a group of miscreants vandalised shops in the market area and set some of them on fire. To restore order, the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Tripura State Rifles, and Tripura Police were deployed. Law enforcement had to resort to a mild lathi charge to disperse the mob and control the situation.
