NEW DELHI, May 10: In a significant diplomatic development, US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced a “full and immediate ceasefire” between India and Pakistan, though no details were shared regarding the terms or specific framework of the agreement.
The announcement was made through Truth Social, Trump’s proprietary social media platform, where he stated: “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire. Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Further clarifying the developments behind the scenes, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed that he and Vice President J.D. Vance were at the helm of the negotiations that led to the breakthrough. In an official statement released by the State Department, Rubio said: “Over the past 48 hours, Vice President Vance and I engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik.”
He added, “I am pleased to announce that the governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and will begin talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site. We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif for their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace.”
According to State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, during his communication with Indian External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, Secretary Rubio emphasized the urgent need for de-escalation and the restoration of direct communication channels to prevent further conflict.
“He further proposed US support in facilitating productive discussions to avert future disputes,” Bruce stated, underscoring the US administration’s commitment to fostering regional stability.
