WAHINGTON, July 7: President Donald Trump launched a sharp rebuke at Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Sunday, accusing his one-time ally of going “completely off the rails” following Musk’s recent announcement of a new political outfit, the America Party. Trump, writing on his social media platform Truth Social, referred to Musk as a “train wreck” and warned that third parties in U.S. politics only cause “complete and total disruption and chaos.”
The criticism comes days after Musk publicly unveiled the formation of the America Party, declaring it a platform to fight against what he described as bipartisan corruption and government waste. “America is being bankrupted by bipartisan waste and corruption. This is not democracy — it’s a one-party system in disguise,” Musk said on Saturday, arguing that the America Party would restore freedom and accountability to U.S. governance.
In response, Trump rejected Musk’s initiative, claiming that third parties have historically failed in American politics. “He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States. The one thing Third Parties are good for is the creation of Complete and Total DISRUPTION & CHAOS,” Trump stated.
Trump also took credit for the termination of the federal Electric Vehicle (EV) mandate, which he said was eliminated in a sweeping legislative bill he recently signed into law. Lauding his legislation as “One Big Beautiful Bill,” Trump noted that Americans are now free to choose between gasoline-powered vehicles, hybrids, or any new technologies without being forced into buying electric cars.
The president further criticized Musk for expressing support for him in the past, despite knowing Trump’s strong opposition to the EV mandate. “He said he had no problems with that—I was very surprised,” Trump remarked.
In a separate swipe, Trump disclosed that Musk had requested one of his close friends be appointed to head NASA, a move Trump considered a conflict of interest due to Musk’s commercial involvement in the space sector. “I thought it inappropriate that a very close friend of Elon, who was in the space business, run NASA, when NASA is such a big part of Elon’s corporate life,” Trump said, adding that his primary duty is to protect the American public.
