WASHINGTON, May 23: U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Friday that Apple could face a 25% tariff on iPhones sold in the United States if they are not manufactured domestically. Sharing on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated that he had informed Apple CEO Tim Cook of his expectation that iPhones sold in the U.S. be “manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else.” He added that if Apple fails to comply, the company would be required to pay a tariff of at least 25%.

Following the announcement, Apple shares fell 2.5% in premarket trading, contributing to a dip in U.S. stock index futures. It remains unclear whether the president has the authority to impose tariffs on a single company. Apple did not immediately comment on the statement.

Apple has been shifting some of its manufacturing operations to India amid ongoing tariffs imposed on China, which have disrupted supply chains and raised concerns over rising iPhone prices. The company recently indicated that most iPhones sold in the U.S. during the June quarter would come from India, highlighting its strategic diversification away from China.
