IMPHAL, Aug 2: In a major breakthrough against cybercrime, the Cyber Crime Unit of Manipur Police arrested two men from Assam for allegedly operating mule bank accounts used in fraudulent online transactions. The arrests were made during a targeted operation on Thursday night at the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT), Khuman Lampak in Imphal West district.
The accused have been identified as Bikram Basumatary (31) from Barpeta district and Sudem Basumatary (35) from Chirang district in Assam. According to police officials, both were part of a wider cybercrime network responsible for creating and managing bank accounts used to channel illicit gains from cyber frauds.
Investigators also revealed that the two accused were engaged in gathering sensitive personal data such as Aadhaar numbers and banking credentials, which were then exploited for fraudulent purposes.
Two of the bank accounts operated by the duo have already been linked to economic offences reported across multiple states, with records found in the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal.
