New Delhi, September 9: In a significant political development for Manipur, two former BJP legislators and a prominent entrepreneur formally joined the Indian National Congress (INC) on Monday at Indira Bhawan, New Delhi. The move marks a strategic step in the Congress party’s efforts to rebuild its base in the northeastern state.
The induction ceremony was presided over by AICC in-charge for Manipur, Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, and Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President K. Meghachandra Singh, who welcomed the new members into the party fold.
- Y. Surchandra Singh – A retired IAS officer and three-time MLA from Kakching constituency (2007–2017). Singh joined BJP for the 2022 elections but has now returned to the Congress. His comeback adds both administrative expertise and long-standing voter connections in Kakching.
- L. Radhakishore Singh – Former MLA from Oinam constituency, elected in 2002 and 2017. After contesting on a BJP ticket in 2022, he has now shifted allegiance to the Congress. His career spans more than two decades across various political platforms.
- Uttamkumar Ningthoujam – An entrepreneur from Thanga constituency and founder of ELVEEGO Circuits Pvt. Ltd. With international experience in the electronics sector across India, Singapore, Japan, the U.S., and Europe.
The induction, approved by the All India Congress Committee (AICC), is seen as part of the party’s broader strategy to consolidate its position in Manipur. The formal joining took place at 5:30 p.m. on September 8, underscoring Congress’s renewed push to strengthen its organisational structure in the state.
