SENAPATI, June 6: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, security forces seized a large consignment of brown sugar worth approximately ₹17 crore in Kangpokpi district. Two alleged drug smugglers were arrested during the operation, police officials confirmed on Friday.
The joint operation was launched based on specific intelligence inputs. The law enforcement team intercepted a Hyundai Creta near Daili village along National Highway-102, under the jurisdiction of the Kangpokpi Police Station. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 75 soap cases containing suspected brown sugar, concealed inside the rear doors of the car.
According to officials, the total weight of the seized narcotics, including packaging, was 2.88 kilograms. The brown sugar is believed to be of Myanmar origin and was allegedly being transported to Guwahati, Assam, via Nagaland.
The arrested individuals were identified as M Ngaiyu Vekhe and A Dahnii Abraham, both residents of Thingba Khullen village in Senapati district. During on-spot interrogation, the duo reportedly confessed that they intended to deliver the narcotics to their associates in Guwahati.
Authorities have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Further investigations are underway to uncover the larger smuggling network involved in this trafficking attempt.
