AIZAWL, June 27: In a proud moment for Mizoram and Northeast India, two journalists from the state — HC Vanlalruata and Isaac Zoramsanga — have made history by being part of the BBC World team that won an International Emmy Award for its coverage of the Myanmar conflict.
The BBC News documentary, titled “Myanmar’s Civil War,” earned the prestigious Outstanding Continuing News Coverage – Short Form award at the 46th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards, hosted by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS).
Vanlalruata and Zoramsanga served as field producers for the project, providing crucial ground-level support during a ten-day reporting mission in western Myanmar. Their work helped bring international attention to the ongoing humanitarian and political crisis unfolding in the region since the military coup in 2021.
The 6.5-minute documentary captured the intense reality of the civil war, highlighting how rebel groups have driven the military out of several regions, while also documenting alleged human rights abuses, including torture, abduction, and killings carried out by the junta to suppress resistance.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma congratulated the duo on their historic achievement via social media. “I congratulate HC Vanlalruata and Isaac Zoramsanga for their historic achievement as the first from Mizoram to be part of a team that won an International Emmy Award. Your dedication and courage in reporting ‘Myanmar’s Civil War’ make Mizoram proud,” he posted.
The official Emmy Awards account also acknowledged the recognition, stating, “The NewsEmmys Award for Outstanding Continuing News Coverage – Short Form goes to Myanmar’s Civil War (@BBCWorld).”
