Imphal, October 3: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared 54 state private universities across 18 states in India, including three from Manipur, as defaulters for failing to comply with mandatory disclosure and submission requirements.
The three Manipur universities on the list are Manipur Asian International University and Bir Tikendrajit University in Imphal West, and Manipur International University, Imphal.
According to the UGC, the institutions were required under Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956, and the public self-disclosure guidelines issued on June 10, 2024, to submit detailed information and supporting documents in a prescribed format and to make them publicly accessible on their official websites. These measures are aimed at ensuring transparency and accessibility of information to students and the public.
Despite repeated follow-ups via emails and online meetings, many universities, including the 54 listed, failed to comply. UGC Secretary Manish Joshi stated that only seven of the defaulter universities have submitted the required information so far. He warned that those failing to comply within a week will face showcause notices and further action.
The list of defaulters spans multiple states, including Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal. Some notable names include Amity University (Patna, Ranchi, Mohali), Azim Premji University (Bhopal), Dr. D.Y. Patil Dnyan Prasarak University (Pune), and Swami Vivekananda University (North 24 Parganas).
The UGC has urged the universities to complete the submission and upload process immediately to ensure compliance with statutory regulations and uphold accountability in higher education.
