UGC Grants Autonomous Status to Asufii Christian Institute and Mount Everest College

SENAPATI, Feb 25: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has conferred autonomous status on Asufii Christian Institute, Punanamei, Mao, and Mount Everest College, Taphou, Senapati District, both affiliated to Manipur University, for a period of five years beginning from the academic session 2026–27.

According to official communications issued by Dr. R. Manoj Kumar, Joint Secretary, UGC, the Commission in its meeting held on January 30, 2026, approved the recommendations of the Standing Committee on Autonomous Colleges to grant autonomy to the two institutions for the period 2026–27 to 2030–31.

The approval has been accorded under Clause 7.4 of the UGC (Conferment of Autonomous Status Upon Colleges and Measures for Maintenance of Standards in Autonomous Colleges) Regulations, 2023.

The UGC has requested Manipur University to issue the necessary notification within 30 days regarding the conferment of autonomous status to the colleges. Both institutions are required to comply with all provisions of the UGC Regulations for Autonomous Colleges, 2023, failing which action may be initiated under Clause 13 of the said Regulations.

The institutes will also be required to apply for an extension of autonomous status at least three months prior to the completion of the autonomy period.

The conferment of autonomous status is expected to provide greater academic flexibility, enable curriculum innovation, and strengthen administrative efficiency in both institutions.
