UKHRUL, Oct 5: Officials have reported that 80% of the weapons stolen by a mob during violent clashes in Ukhrul District on October 2 have been recovered. This achievement was made possible through the collaborative efforts of security forces and local leaders.
In a press briefing, Inspector General of Police (Operations) I. K. Muivah explained that the clashes led to four deaths and several injuries, prompting a swift police response to restore order in the key hill district headquarters. He praised the teamwork among Ukhrul Police, Manipur Rifles, Assam Rifles, and the Border Security Force (BSF), as well as the vital support from local village authorities and civil society organizations (CSOs).
Muivah highlighted the crucial role of leaders from Hunphun and Hungpung villages in de-escalating tensions. He noted, “Since the evening of October 2, normalcy has been gradually restored.” Through organized search operations, backed by local leaders and organizations, 16 of the 20 stolen weapons have been retrieved. “This success is unprecedented and praiseworthy for all those who have played a very positive role in restoring normalcy and ensuring law and order,” Muivah added, expressing optimism about recovering the remaining weapons.

Sanjeev Singh, Commander of the 10th Sector Assam Rifles, addressed the media, calling for ongoing peace initiatives and confirming that the situation is now in a de-escalation phase. “The unfortunate incident was managed with minimal force. We appeal to all villages to continue cooperating to de-escalate the situation and engage in peaceful dialogue,” Singh stated.
Additionally, Singh mentioned that talks are underway with local authorities to form a joint working group aimed at resolving the underlying disputes between the villages.
It maybe noted that senior police officials, including IGP I. K. Muivah, DIG Worngam Ningshen, and SP Ningshem Vashum, were deputed to Ukhrul alongside BSF and Assam Rifles units to assist the district administration in handling the crisis.
