Tinsukia, October 17: Three Army personnel were injured when ULFA(I) militants fired at a security camp in the Kakopathar area of Tinsukia district, Assam, early on Friday. The attack, carried out around 12:30 am from a moving vehicle, prompted a joint search operation by the Army and police to apprehend the militants.

A defence spokesperson said that the Army personnel retaliated immediately, taking care to avoid damage to nearby civilian homes. The attackers fled the scene after carrying out speculative firing using automatic weapons.

The proscribed ULFA(I) outfit claimed responsibility, describing the strike as part of its “operation vengeance”, aimed at sending a message that “no amount of force using the latest technology can dissuade the outfit from pursuing its aim.”

While the three personnel sustained minor abrasions, no major injuries were reported. The area, which lies close to the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh interstate boundary, has been thoroughly sanitised, and joint Army-police search operations are ongoing.

Local sources indicated that the attack may have been carried out from a truck that crossed over into Arunachal Pradesh, underscoring the challenges of securing border areas in the region.
