Senapati, August 22: The United Naga Council (UNC) has finalized an 11-member delegation that will engage in talks with the Government of India in New Delhi on August 26, 2025, over the contentious issues of scrapping the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the construction of border fencing in Naga-inhabited areas.
According to a statement issued by UNC on Thursday, the delegation will include:
- Ng. Lorho – President, UNC
- Samson Remei – Convenor, Working Committee, UNC
- Vareiyo Shatsang – General Secretary, UNC
- AC. Thotso – Member Secretary, Working Committee, UNC
- KS. Paul Leo – Member, Working Committee, UNC
- L. Adani – Member, Working Committee, UNC
- Wango Kohring Victor – Speaker, UNC
- Th. Angteshang Maring – President, ANSAM
- Isaac Charenamei – General Secretary, ANSAM
- Ch. Priscilla Thiumai – President, NWU
- A. Hoibila Maram – General Secretary, NWU
The UNC has consistently opposed border fencing and the withdrawal of the FMR, arguing that such moves would sever the age-old cross-border ties of Naga communities straddling India and Myanmar. The council has warned that it will sustain its agitation until the interests and rights of the Naga people are safeguarded.
On August 16, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla met UNC leaders and assured them that their concerns had been conveyed to the Union Home Ministry, while appealing for peace during the dialogue process.
Earlier, on August 11, the UNC convened an emergency presidential council meeting with tribal hoho leaders following the expiry of its 20-day ultimatum to the government. The meeting resolved to intensify agitation if the Centre failed to respond to its demands, reaffirming the border issue as the core of its campaign.
