Senapati, September 3: The United Naga Council (UNC) has announced that it will enforce a trade embargo across all Naga-inhabited areas in Manipur, effective from midnight on September 8, 2025, until further notice. The decision was taken during the UNC Presidential Council meeting held on August 11, 2025.
In an official statement, the UNC cited the Government of India’s unilateral abrogation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) with Myanmar and the ongoing construction of border fencing in Naga areas as the main triggers for the embargo. The council noted that despite repeated memoranda, press statements, public rallies, and demonstrations since January 19, 2024, the government’s indifferent attitude left them with no choice but to adopt a stricter form of agitation.
The UNC urged all Naga people within Manipur and Naga communities beyond the state to fully cooperate with the embargo, emphasizing that the action aims to protect Naga identity, culture, traditional ties, and inherent rights over their land. The council also requests the kind cooperation and understanding from all concerned and the general public of the state.
