IMPHAL, Jan 13: Tension escalated in Kangpokpi district following the vandalism of monoliths and public property in Ireng Naga village, prompting residents to enforce a road blockade for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Sunday night when miscreants allegedly affiliated with the Suspension of Operations (SoO) group Kuki National Front–President (KNF-P) dismantled the village’s entry gate and defaced a memorial stone by writing slogans such as “Kukiland” and “Stay Away.” A vehicle waiting shed at the village gate, along with chairs kept there, was also vandalised.
In protest against the incident, residents of Ireng Naga village began blocking the Ireng road from around 10 am on Monday, severely disrupting traffic movement along the route. The indefinite blockade left several passenger vehicles stranded on the stretch commonly known as Tiger Road or German Road, which connects Churachandpur with Kangpokpi.
The German Road has been a long-standing point of contention, with Naga communities alleging that its construction was initiated by Kuki groups without requisite government approval and that it encroaches upon their ancestral lands. The route has also been linked to unauthorised settlements and alleged illegal activities.
Owing to the absence of mandatory environmental clearance, the National Green Tribunal had earlier ordered a halt to the construction of the road, further adding to the controversy surrounding the project.
Meanwhile, local authorities have appealed for restraint and dialogue to prevent further escalation of tensions. Investigations have been launched to identify and take action against those responsible for the vandalism.
