WCKCSOs Issue 36-Hour Ultimatum Over Travel Restrictions on Kuki-Zo People, Threaten Blockade on NH-2

Kangpokpi, August 6: The Working Committee of Kuki Civil Society Organisations (WCKCSOs) has issued a 36-hour ultimatum demanding the immediate lifting of restrictions on the movement of Kuki-Zo people between Kangpokpi (Kanggui) and Churachandpur (Songpi). The group has warned of a total blockade of essential commodities along National Highway-2 from 7:00 AM on August 8 if their demands are not met.

In a strongly-worded statement released on Wednesday, the WCKCSOs condemned what it described as an “uncivilized and undemocratic protest” that has led to prolonged travel disruptions and hardships for commuters since July 15. The committee alleged that the ongoing blockade was orchestrated by radical elements from the Meitei community, using the “Foothills Naga” as scapegoats to foment division between the Kuki-Zo and Naga communities.

The WCKCSOs specifically named Federation of Haomee leader Sapamacha Jadumani and FOCS member Th Manihar as the key instigators of the unrest, accusing them of inciting communal sentiments among sections of the Liangmei community residing in peripheral areas.

“The deliberate targeting of Kuki-Zo movement routes and the disruption of essential supply lines is a calculated act of ethnic persecution,” the statement read. It further criticized both district and central authorities for their “continued inaction” in addressing the situation.

If the restrictions are not withdrawn within 36 hours, the WCKCSOs said it would enforce a total blockade of food and essential items via NH-2 until the issue is resolved. The committee also warned that any untoward incidents arising from the situation would be the sole responsibility of the individuals named and the relevant government authorities.

The press note concluded by reaffirming the Kuki CSOs’ commitment to protecting the rights and livelihoods of the Kuki-Zo people and urged all stakeholders to work toward restoring normalcy and mutual respect in the region.
