NEW DELHI, Dec 20: The Winter session of Parliament came to a close today with both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha adjourned sine die. The session, which began on November 25, was marked by significant disruptions, particularly from opposition members, who protested over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on Dr. B R Ambedkar.

The Lok Sabha witnessed chaos this morning as opposition MPs raised slogans against the Home Minister’s remarks. In the midst of the uproar, Speaker Om Birla called for order and urged MPs to follow parliamentary rules, warning of action against those protesting at any gate of Parliament. He emphasized that maintaining the dignity of Parliament is a collective responsibility. Despite the disruptions, two bills related to the One Nation One Election were referred to the Joint Committee of Parliament before the House was adjourned sine die.

In the Rajya Sabha, the morning session was initially adjourned until 12 noon after the House erupted in noisy scenes. Slogans and counter-slogans between the treasury and opposition benches led to a suspension of proceedings. Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar addressed the situation, urging members to respect public trust and expectations, while calling for accountability and introspection. He expressed concern over the state of parliamentary proceedings, highlighting how disruptions erode public confidence.

When the Rajya Sabha reconvened at noon, a motion was moved to nominate 12 members to the Joint Committee of Parliament on the One Nation One Election bill. In his valedictory remarks, Chairman Dhankhar regretted that the session’s productivity had dropped to just 40 percent due to continuous disruptions. He urged members to reaffirm their trust in democratic values and stressed the importance of meaningful debates and discourse. Dhankhar also criticized the excessive use of motions under Rule 267, stating that such actions undermine the House’s dignity.
