Imphal, September 13: Youth activists of the Congress and Manipur Peoples’ Party (MPP) staged demonstrations near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s programme venue in Imphal on Saturday, opposing his first visit to the strife-torn state since the 2023 ethnic clashes.
Holding placards and shouting slogans, members of the MPP Youth Front gathered outside the party’s office, located close to Kangla Fort — where the Prime Minister was scheduled to inaugurate several development projects and address a public rally. They alleged that the visit was a “political ploy” and not intended to restore peace and normalcy.
Simultaneously, Congress youth wing activists staged a protest outside Congress Bhavan, barely 100 metres from the PM’s function venue. Security personnel stopped protesters from marching towards Kangla Fort, maintaining a tight security cordon.
Despite the heavy downpour and waterlogging in parts of Imphal, thousands of people from across the valley turned up at Kangla Fort to listen to the Prime Minister’s address, reflecting a mix of resistance and strong public turnout during his high-profile visit.
