Guwahati, October 8: In a major development in the investigation into the mysterious death of late singer Zubeen Garg, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Wednesday arrested Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sandipan Garg, the singer’s cousin.
According to sources, Sandipan Garg — who was reportedly present aboard the yacht in Singapore at the time of Zubeen’s death — was taken into custody following a detailed round of questioning at the CID office in Guwahati. He is expected to be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court later in the day.
Sandipan had earlier been interrogated by the SIT along with several others connected to the case. In a social media post earlier this week, he had written, “I’ve fully cooperated with the SIT.”
The probe into the popular singer’s death has intensified over the past week, with multiple arrests made. On October 1, the SIT apprehended Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma and event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta — both booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The investigation has since expanded to include drummer Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and co-singer Amritprabha Mahanta, who were also taken into custody.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated the government’s resolve to uncover the complete truth behind the incident. “I am confident that everyone involved from Singapore will join the investigation soon. Our main goal is to determine exactly what happened to Zubeen Garg and how he passed away,” Sarma said, adding that some individuals have claimed they are being restrained by Singaporean authorities from travelling to India for questioning.
With the SIT tightening its probe, coordination with Singaporean authorities is expected to increase as investigators seek crucial evidence and testimonies linked to the high-profile case that has gripped Assam and the wider Northeast.
