The Cabinet has approved a major extension of health coverage to all senior citizens aged 70 and above through the Ayushman Bharat PM Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). This new policy will offer free medical treatment up to ₹5 lakh annually to around 6 crore senior citizens from approximately 4.5 crore families.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the decision, noting its importance in improving healthcare access for the elderly. A new, specialized card will be issued to eligible seniors under AB PM-JAY. Those who are already part of AB PM-JAY will receive an additional ₹5 lakh annual coverage for themselves. Others will benefit from up to ₹5 lakh per year on a family basis.

Senior citizens who are already covered by other public health schemes, such as the Central Government Health Scheme or Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme, can choose to continue with their existing coverage or switch to AB PM-JAY. Additionally, those with private health insurance or Employees’ State Insurance will also be able to access benefits under AB PM-JAY.
