In a resolute statement released today, the United Naga Council (UNC) underscores the pivotal importance of electing a Naga representative to the 18th Lok Sabha II Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency. Emphasizing the longstanding Indo-Naga issue, which has been under negotiation for over six decades, the UNC stresses the critical need to secure a voice for the Nagas in Parliament.
The UNC affirms that after thorough deliberation and consensus, it has been decided that a Naga candidate must be elected to advocate and represent the rights and aspirations of the Naga people. The UNC reiterates that without adequate representation, the rights of the Nagas have been suppressed, ignored, and undermined.
Following a presidential council meeting held on October 27, 2023, the UNC reaffirmed its commitment to fielding a consensus candidate from amongst the intending candidates for the upcoming MP election. In a joint meeting convened on February 27, 2024, intending candidates for the MP election submitted undertakings acknowledging the paramount importance of electing a Naga MP and ensuring unity to prevent division of Naga votes.
Furthermore, the UNC highlights the unwavering support of the Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF) towards the Indo-Naga peace process and the integration of contiguous Naga areas under one administrative umbrella. Unlike national parties, the NPF operates based on principles aligned with Naga political aspirations and identity.
In light of these principles and proper consultations with leaders, the UNC has resolved to support the candidate endorsed by the NPF. Therefore, all Tribe Hohos/Councils, tribal frontal organizations, Naga Civil Society Organizations, and regional organizations are urged to unite and support the candidate identified by the NPF, setting aside political affiliations and personal interests for the greater cause of the Naga people.
The UNC calls upon all Nagas to demonstrate their commitment to the Naga cause by rallying behind the chosen candidate, thereby ensuring effective representation and advancement of Naga rights and aspirations in the Parliament.
