Nagaland: 26 June 2024
In a bid to secure the release of 45 Naga youths detained in Mohali Jail, Punjab, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has called upon Nagaland’s Advocate General, K.N. Balgopal, to intervene. The youths were among 155 employees arrested by Punjab police on May 14 and 15 in connection with two fraudulent call centers allegedly involved in duping foreigners through fake schemes.
According to media reports, these call centers had been operating in Mohali and tricked unsuspecting foreigners into purchasing gift cards. The arrests have cast a shadow over the region, sparking concerns about the employment opportunities available to the youth of Nagaland and the Northeast.
Chief Minister Rio, recognizing the severity of the situation, has directed Advocate General Balgopal to personally oversee the case. He urged him to “depute his team to take urgent necessary actions for the release of the innocent Naga youths who were arrested.” The CM’s swift action reflects the growing anxiety among the families and communities affected by the arrests.
The incident has also prompted a broader discussion on the employment challenges facing the youth in the Northeast. Concerned citizens are questioning why the government and regional authorities are not doing more to promote entrepreneurship and provide better job opportunities. The call for action includes urging leaders to focus on nurturing entrepreneurial skills among the educated youth to prevent them from falling into such precarious job situations that bring shame and trouble to the community.
Helping Hands, a foundation led by DGP Robin Hibu, has been tirelessly warning Northeasterners about the risks of getting involved in dubious sectors. Despite their efforts, incidents like this continue to occur, highlighting the need for more proactive measures from political and community leaders.
As the legal battle unfolds, the hope is that the intervention of the Advocate General and the support from the government will lead to a swift resolution, ensuring that the innocent are freed and that such incidents are prevented in the future through better job opportunities and stronger community support.
