For the first time since the Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, will visit Manipur on Monday to meet with those affected by ethnic violence in various districts. The Congress party had secured both constituencies in the state during the elections.
State Congress President K. Meghachandra announced that Gandhi will fly from Delhi to Silchar, and then proceed to Jiribam district, which recently experienced fresh violence on June 6. He will visit relief camps in Jiribam before returning to Silchar airport and flying to Imphal.
Upon arrival in Imphal, Gandhi will travel to Churachandpur district to interact with residents of relief camps. Following this, he will journey by road to Moirang in Bishnupur district to visit additional relief camps. A meeting with Governor Anusuiya Uikey is also being arranged in Imphal before he departs the state.
This marks Gandhi’s first visit to Manipur post-elections, and his third visit since violence broke out on May 3 last year. Congress legislature party leader O. Ibobi Singh noted Gandhi’s commitment to understanding the suffering of the affected people by visiting relief camps.
