Imphal:   In the midst of a prolonged hunger strike by the Students’ Union of Dhanamanjuri University, the university’s Syndicate has made decisive moves regarding staff appointments, seeking to quell the ongoing unrest among students.

The Syndicate, chaired by Gyan Prakash, commissioner of Higher Education and vice-chancellor (in-charge) of DM University, convened at the Administrative Block on Thursday to finalize the appointments of both teaching and non-teaching staff. Following extensive deliberations, Gyan Prakash announced the Syndicate’s unanimous approval of the impending staff appointment results, scheduled to be disclosed by Thursday evening.

Addressing the media, Gyan Prakash underscored the Syndicate’s commitment to transparency and efficiency in the appointment process. He also outlined the procedure for selecting a new Vice Chancellor, revealing that a roster of qualified professors has been submitted to a select committee for review. The committee’s recommendations will play a pivotal role in the final appointment decision for the new VC.

Prakash also stated that the exams for sixth-semester students would be held soon, and results are anticipated by August 20. He recognized that the scarcity of non-teaching personnel had caused delays but assured that steps were being taken to address this issue promptly.

Despite these developments, the Students’ Union, led by general secretary Ksh Dijen, has opted to continue their hunger strike until the formal appointment of the new Vice Chancellor is confirmed through official letters. Speaking at the protest site at IMA Panthoibi Community Hall in Thangmeiband, Imphal, Dijen reiterated the union’s demand for concrete assurances from the administration.

“We need tangible confirmation through official appointment letters,” asserted Dijen, highlighting the union’s skepticism towards the administration’s assurances.
